Our topic for the 2016 Animal Allies challenge is about how Varroa Mites are impacting the decline of bees. Varroa mites, along with crop monoculture and pesticides are just one of the many contributing factors to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). For our project, we are creating a type of bee smoker pellet that uses lemon juice or essential oils and can destroy Varroa mites, but not the bees. In order to find out more about our topic, we talked with experts, explored existing solutions, and conducted experiments.
The Varroa Mite is the dangerous parasite for the bees. They have little tentacles like an octopus that makes them stay on the bees and hang on their bodies where ever they go. The tentacles also have suckers that suck the blood out of the bees so they become weaker and weaker until the Varroa Mites go off them and leave them to die. This is how the Varroa Mites mysteriously appear in bee colonies and how the bees mysteriously disappear. The Varroa Mite has six legs when it’s a teenager and eight legs when it’s an adult. However, the Varroa Mites do not like lavender, but the bees do because they pollinate lavender. That is one solution how we can save the bees.
The solution our team has come up with is to create an acidic bee smoker pellet. The acid on the bee smoker pellet will come from either lemon juice or essential oils. Varroa Mites are not fond of acidic things (with a lower pH level), bees, on the other hand, can tolerate them.
Even though there are many solutions being developed on how to stop the spread of Varroa Mites, you can still be a part of the CCD prevention process. Spread the word about the horrible decline of bees and help!
